For DRG A06 Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital was experiencing a high LOS in the ICU (resulting in higher costs), high ICU readmission rates and a high number of MERT calls.
In an effort to improve their performance Royal Brisbane conducted staff and consumer experience surveys, established a multidisciplinary steering committee (including finance), created a multidisciplinary tracheostomy team and implemented a five day
a week service.
As a result, Royal Brisbane has seen an improvement in their performance. They report a downward trending of cost per NWAU for the A06 patient cohort, a reduction in overall RSI by 1%, stable LOS at 24 days, a reduction in Emergency Readmissions, and a reduction in days to decannulation.
