The theme for the 2019 meeting is Achieving better health outcomes from medicines: improving priorities and monitoring progress. It is well known that advances in medicines have significantly improved life expectancy, quality of life and delaying the onset of diseases. The challenges of delivering safe and cost-effective medication, education to staff and patients and carers is critical in ensuring patient safety in the hospital and community. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare 2018 reported that nearly 3 billion dollars was spent on medicines in public hospitals in 2015-16. However also acknowledged that there is at present an incomplete picture of medicines dispensed in hospitals. The Medications improvement group is now in its 5 th year and provides an opportunity for hospital health executives and leaders to share how they achieve best practice in relation the use of medications in Australian and New Zealand hospitals.
